CHORAL ADJUDICATOR
GLORIA GASSI
Gloria Gassi has been described as “vocally
outstanding…with an empathy for the spirit of the song…beautiful tone
and a prowess for
ringing high notes" (LFP). An
accomplished singer of opera, oratorio, and recital repertoire, Ms.
Gassi also sang as soloist and in ensemble with the acclaimed Elmer
Iseler
Singers, Canada's
esteemed professional choir of twenty voices.
A graduate of the University
of Western Ontario,
Ms. Gassi holds a Masters in Music with Honours in Voice Performance
and
Literature, a Licentiate in Voice Performance, A. Mus. in Voice
Performance (Gold Medal) and an ARCT in Piano. A recipient of the
Sir Ernest
MacMillan Award for Choral Conducting, Ms. Gassi’s choirs are known for
their beautiful tone, proficient vocal technique and expressive
artistry. As Associate Teacher in
Music Education
with OISE, University of Toronto and York University,
Ms. Gassi has been influential in the development and education of
future music teachers. She has adjudicated festivals in Ontario, Nova Scotia,
New
Brunswick, Newfoundland
and Alberta
and is a frequent presenter of
workshops in Voice and Choral Techniques.
Ms.
Gassi is appointed to both the Departments of Performance Studies and
Music Education at the Don Wright Faculty of Music, University of Western Ontario,
where she teaches Voice, Vocal Methods, Foundations in Singing, Choral
Techniques, and conducts the St. Cecilia Singers.
CHORAL SPEECH and SOLO SPEECH
ADJUDICATOR
TERRY WELSH
Born and raised in Edmonton, Terry Welsh completed his undergraduate
and graduate studies in theatre arts at the University of Alberta,
graduating with a Master of Arts Degree in Dramatic Theory. He studied
voice with Mr. David Astor and moved to Winnipeg in 1976, working in
the city’s thriving theatre community as an actor, director, instructor
and speech coach. He has served as Director of Outreach for Prairie
Theatre Exchange, Principal of Summer Theatre School Manitoba and Drama
Director for the International Music Camp in North Dakota. He assumed
directorship of the Arts Branch for the Manitoba Government in 1996.
After a term as Executive Director of the Manitoba Conservatory of
Music & Arts, he returned to government where he currently oversees
the work of the Tourism Secretariat. He is a frequent adjudicator at
local and provincial festivals in the disciplines of speech arts and
musical theatre.
CREATIVE MUSIC ADJUDICATOR
DOROTHY
CHANG
The music of composer Dorothy Chang has been performed by the
Aspen, Chicago Civic, Albany, Indianapolis, Queens, Seattle and
Vancouver Symphony Orchestras, and by chamber ensembles including
eighth blackbird, the Smith Quartet, Chicago Saxophone Quartet, Collage
New Music, Music from China, Toca Loca and TONK, among others. She has
received commissions from Chamber Music America, the Barlow
Endowment, the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, Canada Council for
the Arts and the British Columbia Arts Council, as well as from
numerous performers and ensembles. Her music has been featured at
festivals across North America and abroad, most recently at the PAN
Music Festival (Seoul), Lontano Festival (UK), and the International
Viola Congress in Montreal.
For the 2005-2008 concert seasons, Dorothy has been appointed
composer-in-residence of the Albany Symphony Orchestra through the
Music Alive program of Meet the Composer and the American Symphony
Orchestra League. She is presently Assistant Professor of Music
at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.
CLASSIC GUITAR ADJUDICATOR
PATRICK ROUX
Patrick Roux won the Canadian National Guitar Competition in 1989,
solidifying his reputation as one of Canada's finest guitarists. In
1992 he won 2nd place at the prestigious Concours International de Duo
de Guitare Classique de Montélimar, France with partner Robert
Latreille. This outstanding duo then recorded their first CD in 1993.
Roux is also an accomplished composer and his works are published by
Productions d'Oz. He has created a repertoire for the group
Contretemps/Go, with whom he released a début compact disc in
1996 and now composes and arranges for the CGQ. Roux is often heard on
CBC radio, on both the French and English networks and has performed
with orchestra and played for the Queen of Jordan, the Princess of
Holland, the Prime Minister and the Governor General of Canada
INSTRUMENTAL (BRASS, WOODWIND) ADJUDICATOR
KEITH ATKINSON
Keith Atkinson has been Associate Principal Oboe of the
Toronto Symphony Orchestra since 1985. In addition to his symphonic
duties, Mr. Atkinson is an active recitalist and chamber musician. He
is a founding member of the Meridian Trio which specializes in unusual
wind chamber music and has a CD featuring music for flute, oboe and
piano. He plays with the Bach Consort which has recorded two CDs of
Bach arias and cantatas. He also performs with New Music Concerts in
Toronto, the Mississauga Choral Society, and Music at Metropolitan
United, Toronto, and has played Principal Oboe with the National Arts
Centre Orchestra, Ottawa and the Hamilton (Ontario) Philharmonic. He is
on the faculties of the University of Toronto, the Glenn Gould School
of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and the National Youth
Orchestra of Canada. He is also the woodwind coach for the Toronto
Symphony Youth Orchestra.
Raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Mr. Atkinson began piano studies at age 5,
clarinet at age 9, and oboe at age 12. He earned a Bachelor of Music
with High Distinction from Indiana University and a Master of Music
from Northwestern University, where he was a student of Ray Still.
While in graduate school, he was Principal Oboe of the Civic Orchestra
of Chicago and played extra with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
MUSICAL THEATRE ADJUDICATOR
JUNE CROWLEY
June Crowley holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of
Toronto and is a Scholarship Winner with the Royal Conservatory of
Music. She began her Musical Theatre Training at The Academy of The
Shaw Festival and has been studying the Art of Musical Theatre
Performance “On-The-Boards” ever since. She is currently on Staff at
Sheridan College in the Music Theatre Performance Program. She has
worked as a performer across Canada and The United States.
She has performed with The Stratford Festival, The Canadian Opera
Company, the Shaw Festival, Drayton Entertainment and Opera Forte. As a
Guest Artist she has appeared with The Windsor Symphony Orchestra, The
Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, The Brownville Concert Series and
Orchestra London.
Her vocal stylings have been heard nationally on CBC Radio, on Canadian
Cast recordings of The Phantom of the Opera, Swingstep, and The Voices
of Star Bright; on film and television in The Music Man; Dracula, A
Chamber Musical; Robin Hood, A Merry Family Musical; End of Summer and
Fancy Dancin’. She has released her solo CD recording Favourite Things,

PIANO ADJUDICATOR
MICHAEL OIKE
Michael Oike enjoys a diverse musical
life in
his hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba. He maintains piano teaching studios
at the Winnipeg and Steinbach branches of the Manitoba Conservatory of
Music and Arts; is heard in performances of chamber music and as vocal
and instrumental accompanist; conducts piano and pedagogy workshops and
masterclasses, and adjudicates at music festivals in Manitoba and
across Canada.
Michael began his piano studies with Alice Nakauchi and Sydney McInnis
in Winnipeg and later with Boris Lysenko at the Royal Conservatory of
Music and University of Toronto where he was awarded the Forsythe
Scholarship as the outstanding graduating pianist. Michael has
studied the piano solo and chamber repertoire with the noted pedagogue
Jeaneane Dowis of New York City at her private studio and as a
fellowship student at the Waterloo Festival at Princeton
University. Michael has also studied the piano/vocal repertoire
with Martin Isepp at the Britten-Pears School in Aldeburgh, England and
the Banff Centre of Fine Arts, and with Rudolf Jansen at the
Mountainview Festival in Alberta.
Michael is dedicated to the festival movement and its continuing
support for music students– he has served as President of the Winnipeg
Music Festival and Piano Syllabus Chair of the AMAF Provincial Syllabus
Committee.

ADJUDICATOR
MARK RUDOLF
Mark Rudoff is
professor of cello, coordinator of chamber music and conductor of the
orchestra at Brandon University. Applauded as “an exceptionally
gifted cellist,” he has appeared in solo recitals and with orchestras
in Canada and the United States, and his solo and chamber performances
have been recorded for broadcast on CBC. Mark performs as a member of
Emerado and the Jarvis Quintet, and has performed with groups including
the Music Project, Parkland Ensemble, and the Allegri Quartet, Mount
Royal Quintet, and Thomas and Isobel Rolston and Friends. Mark has also
served as principal cello of the Calgary Philharmonic and Saskatoon
Symphony Orchestras. Besides his teaching activities at BU, Mark
coaches chamber music and serves as Dean of the Quartet Program at SUNY
Fredonia; and from 2002-05 was conductor of the Winnipeg Youth
Symphony. Mark earned Bachelor’s and Master’s of Music degrees from the
Juilliard School, graduating with the Edward Steuermann Prize. He
studied there with Harvey Shapiro, Lynn Harrell and Joel Krosnick, and
was appointed teaching assistant to the Juilliard Quartet. Mark also
holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Saskatchewan,
graduating with distinction in 1990. He enjoys the odd distinction of
having published an article about music in the Alberta Law Review, and
one with a legal slant in American String Teacher.
STRING, VIOLIN and VIOLA ADJUDICATOR
JAMES ARROWSMITH
James Arrowsmith joined the Cambrian Music Faculty in 2005 after an
illustrious career as a chamber musician. He holds degrees from the
Eastman School of Music and Kent State University, and has participated
in the Hartt School of Music’s Artist Diploma Program, where he was
also adjunct professor of viola in the school’s Community Education
Division. Mr. Arrowsmith has studied and performed with many world
renowned string quartets and chamber musicians, and has appeared at
many leading festivals, including the BRAVO! Vail Valley Music Festival
and the Strings in the Mountains Chamber Music Festival. He has won
numerous first prize awards as a chamber musician. He has performed
throughout the United States and Canada as a chamber musician,
orchestral player, and soloist. He is an alumnus of the National Youth
Orchestra of Canada, and has represented Canada at the World Orchestra
Festival in Japan. James is currently head of the string department at
Cambrian College in Sudbury, Ontario and is the music director of the
Sudbury Youth Orchestra. He is also in demand as a string
adjudicator and clinician.
VOICE ADJUDICATOR
CAROLYN
HART
Carolyn Hart, soprano, is a frequent performer of recital, oratorio and
orchestral repertoire. She performs regularly in the Chicago area
and has toured extensively throughout Canada and Great Britain. Further
concerts have taken her to Hong Kong, Korea and most recently
New York and Paris. She especially enjoys the collaboration of
chamber music and performs with a variety of instrumental ensembles.
Her CD Not Your Usual Lineup features newly commis-sioned works
for soprano, clarinet and piano. Carolyn holds degrees from
the University of Toronto, and completed her Doctorate at the
University of British Columbia. Further studies have taken her to
the Banff School of Fine Arts (Boris Goldovsky); Britten-Pears School
(Peter Pears) in Aldeburgh, England; and the Académie de Musique
(Hughes Cuenod) in Lausanne Switzerland. She has
adjudicated extensively throughout Canada and has also served as juror
for the Canada Council and the Eckhardt-Grammatté
Competition. Dr. Hart is currently Associate Professor and Chair
of Voice at Wheaton College in Chicago.
